BARNES WINS ON DEBUT AS A WORKS CATERHAM DRIVER

3 June 2013

Caterham’s Superlight R600 race car was victorious on its first ever race outing, taking pole position and leading the race at Anglesey from start to finish.

Driven by experienced Caterham racer and newly-appointed Caterham development driver, Jon Barnes, the R600 was able to comfortably hold off the challenge from a number of 300bhp-plus S3 and CSR Caterhams.

The Classic Sports Car Club event welcomed a large grid of vehicles to the ‘Magnificent Sevens’ class of races.

In race two, the R600 finished third after a difficult pit-stop which meant the factory vehicle lost valuable time which it was unable to recover before the chequered flag.

Caterham’s chief motorsport and technical officer, Simon Lambert, said: "To win on its debut after taking pole is a superb result for us. The team learned fast and the car was faultless.

"We knew we already had reliability and durability engineered into the car but racing a new car for the first time is always a challenge, so to achieve a pole and a win in the first race and third in the next race, despite some challenges, was very satisfying."

The R600, unveiled in October last year, will compete in a number of events throughout 2013 before its own race series commences in 2014.
